Flying within multiple restricted areas

I’ve used the form and received exemption to fly within Heysham A & B’s 2 mile restricted zone on the requested date (to film the old church that lies within the zone)

How long did you wait for the response - I requested on 30 May - and no response so far.

Requested same day as you, 30th, and got a reply yesterday.

I think proximity to the nuclear site is key to approval. How far away were you?

Straight line, 1 mile.

Sod’s Law. Exemption day has arrived and it’s 20mph+ winds at ground level gusting up to 35. The area’s very exposed and I don’t want to be watching the Mini 2 drifting toward the power stations. Proved they’ll allow it so I’ll be applying again.

Boom, I have been granted my exemption for this weekend. Flight allowed right next to the perimiter of the power plant. Took some doing and significant effort on my part but we got there!! Looking forward to flying the mission!

What significant effort? All I did was complete the form and wait for the email.

Its been weeks of back and forth emails, remember, EDF were fighting me all the way. Have read through the exemption fully and they have added a condition that the drone cannot be pointed in the direction of the nuclear facillity. I am banned from taking any images. Truly ridiculous.

Heysham are both EDF

Aaaaaand they have now back tracked and removed the no looking clause from the permission!!

The difference between the applications is my video is focused on the station itself and is in very close proximity.

@rayand, did you hear back yet? My flight at Dungeness is going ahead tomorrow. If you are not having any luck I can provide some tips to push the application through.

To recognise Richard’s (@richardmarsh888) achievement in beating the CAA/EDF into submission, and successfully getting the necessary permissions to fly in the surrounding restricted area(a), and taking a photograph of Dungeness Nuclear Power Station whilst in that restricted area, a brand new GADC Badge has been created … the Radio Active Badge.

Congratulations to Richard.

From the exif data in the image, it’s possible to see that he’s well in the zone!

Sadly, there has been a resounding silence - and I have not had the motivation to follow up - but YES - if you have some ideas I would love to follow up.
I am keen to get some great images near Sizewell.

Ok, no problem. This appears to be step one of their process, they dont communicate and just hope you lose interest!
So I recommend you contact both UAVEnquiries@caa.co.uk and ARops@caa.co.uk referencing your BAL number. Ask for the following:
-Update to the application progress and remind them of the date.
-Contact details and name of the airspace sponsor
and any other parties they are liaising with.
-The name/email of the airspace regulator assigned to the application (This is the guy at the CAA who will be processing your request, they do not have direct numbers).

That should move you to the “impending pain in the ass” workload category and they will begin engaging with the sponsor.

What happens next can only be called “Haggling” over the flight boundaries with the CAA playing piggy in the middle and will involve a bit of back and forth. Do you have a flight plan? If so, make sure the corners have OS grid references and make it larger than you need so you have somthing small to conceed! Keep us updated, good luck!
