Tetbury, Cotswolds AONB
- Time and date: 16 December 2022, 5 pm
- Aircraft/camera used: Mini 3 Pro
The settlement has a history stretching back at least 1300 years, to the time of an ancient hill fort, from the early middle ages.
Further info for history nerds (like me)
The first records of Tetbury began in 681 AD, when King Ethelred of Mercia issued a charter granting land near “Tette’s Minster” to the Abbot and Monks of Malmesbury.
The centre of Tetbury has remained largely unchanged since the 16th and 17th centuries when the town was at the height of prosperity as a major wool town. Most of the buildings that survive in the main street were there during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I but it can be difficult to establish the age because of the 18th and 19th century fronts.
It flourished as a centre for the wool trade (as did many parts of the Cotswolds), and has many surviving examples of buildings from throughout 100s of years of history.
Although wool is no longer the same highly prized commodity that it once was, Tetbury continues to thrive. The town centre features somewhere in the region of 25 antique shops and Tetbury is well known for its wide array of independent establishments.
It’s the second largest town in the Cotswolds, the largest being the aforementioned Cirencester.

Weekley Hall Wood just outside Kettering is under threat of development after a planning application was submitted to build on part of it in April.
The application is for the erection of five warehouse buildings, one general industry building, service yards, parking, drainage, landscaping, two substations and one pumping station.
Local people, political parties and conservation groups have joined together to fight against the development, by launching the Save Weekley Hall Wood campaign, starting a petition and involving prominent local people.
The campaign to save the wood has reached more than 10,500 signatures on a petition.

Not going to bore you with details as already posted other examples I took at the show, but suffice to say if your in the region at Xmas time its quite spectacular and worth a visit (viewing by entrance online purchased ticket holders only… and cheap sneaky drone night flyers!).
THIS MONTH’S COMPETITION ROUND IS NOW CLOSED
Vote for the image that best illustrates December:
The poll will close at 22:30 on the 2nd of January 2023
The next round requires you to illustrate January - the thread can be found here
After the drama of five images sharing the top three spots in the last RTF competition - one competitor winning third place twice and the other third place winner also taking first place it has been a relief to this harrassed Chall Com employee to have just the one winner to cope with here.
The image you have judged to be the winner for the December Calendar Competition is this from @JoeC - Fundamental Colour Challenge Gold medallist with a silver, wintry theme:
River Irvine at the Laigh Milton mill
Congratulations Joe and a worthy winner amongst so many other excellent images. A great month’s pictures from everyone who entered!
Oh wow, thanks everybody. I’m well chuffed to have something going in the calendar, that’s made my day (and I now know what my entire family are getting for Christmas next year!)
Well done, Joe, best man/photo won If that doesn’t represent December, not sure what will.
Well deserved
Nice on Joe, great photo!
Great pic, but is it obvious it was took by a drone?
Some really good stuff again here.
ETA: I’m not bitching, the photo should remain the winner, but I think future entries should copy the main RTF and be obvious at least 50-100ft off the ground.
I’m afraid I thought the same, it’s a drone pilots calendar, photos should obviously be from a drone
I’m afraid I have to agree too. My first thought was, it’s a great pic which would grace any calendar, but you wouldn’t look at it and automatically think it’s a drone photo. The rules do state
Well done Joe, a truly December picture
Difficult in that we either come down heavy-handed and then the argument rages whether the photo was taken from a convenient bank or bridge - or was the aircraft over water and therefore obviously in flight.
All competitors, many of whom were probably also the voters were and are aware of the rule. Yet nine of the 36 who responded to the poll did so in favour of the winning entry.
This competition is meant to be fun, there is no cash prize involved and therefore no reason to be minutely examining each picture for any infringements, unlike the Birthday Challenge. Like the RTF it is meant to be for GADC members, entered by GADC members and the winner selected by GADC members. Chall Com are here in a guiding role only.
There are two choices, neither will satisfy everyone. We let Joe’s fine picture remain as the winner (and continue to urge pilots to use the up stick to differentiate between drone and conventional camera) or thank Joe for his effort and hold the poll again without that photo so that the nine who voted the winner can cast their votes elsewhere.
We would prefer the former.
