Hello from Invermoriston near Loch Ness

Hi all .I am a total novice at flying drones and hopefully chose a relaxing hobby .
I brought a DJI Mini 3 from amazon after a lot of research but have not been able to fly it yet due the weather conditions , just desperate to get out and practice …

Hi Colin @colin3 and welcome to GADC :+1: :+1:

Welcome aboard Colin, you’ve found the right place to get all the info you need, and live in the right place to get all the stunning photos/videos we want to see. Check out the members map, there are a few members not too far from you that you might be able to hook up with @BigGee85 just signed up as well. I’m in Inverness on Wednesday afternoon and might have some slack time from work if you fancied a possible meet?

Welcome Husky

Hi @colin3 Welcome to GACD
I’m also a complete novice with a mini pro 4. I’m not far away in Nairn.
I’m new to GACD too and have found the people in this group to be really friendly and helpful. :+1:

Hi Joe Thanks for the welcome . I must admit its a shame not to explore the area i live in and a big enough area to practice in .
Thanks for offer of meeting up but not around Wednesday may be another time :+1:

Hi Thanks for the welcome . I am desperate to get flying but weather not to great . I am just going to take it slowly and have enough space to fly it . Its a great place to explore .

Hi Colin from Edinburgh and I am in the same boat as you except I don’t have a drone yet Did you get a good deal from Amazon??

Hi Ian .Yes i got mini 3 fly more combo £579 .
after a lot of research it was the best one that i could afford and best value . I first brought used like new from amazon £ 540 but sent it back as it was damaged so sent it back and got a new one .The weather has not been good for my first test flight ,hopefully this week I am taking it all very slowly as not very good at multi tasking but looking forward to the experience and luckily have a big enough garden to fly in .
Hopefully it will be a big distraction from the routine of life .
I only decided to get a drone about 3 weeks ago its surprising how much information you can gather in 3 weeks
Have you got anwhere you can fly localy ?

I can find spots locally but not so much in Edinburgh being close to the airport but lots of places in the borders east Lothian and beyond so I won’t be stuck for choice but once I become a full member there is access to dronescene UK which gives you lots of places to visit all over Scotland so the world is your oyster :joy::joy: Good luck on your first flight and don’t worry about the controls as there are a few videos on you tube for beginners to understand the controls so you will be OK and like I saw with a guy selling his drone etc etc he actually wrote on the controller what each joystick did so if that helps you then do what suits you :video_game::ok_hand:

:+1:That’s a good tip labelling the controller it’s got to be idot proof :grinning:.
Good luck

Welcome @colin3 , I’m just down the road in Fife and also have the Mini 3, I bought it last year.

You are surrounded by beautiful countryside but you will need to be aware of the giant flight restriction zone to your west. The Highlands are a great training location for the RAF. This thread has a lot of good info.

Pedantic maybe. But is that not Class D, as in not an FRZ? It only becomes and FRZ under a NOTAM and is flyable with drone at all other times. Good to point it out though as it can be confusing. I switch Class D layer off in Dronescene and check for NOTAMs before flying,

It’s not pedantry, it’s expertise  TBF that’s why I linked the thread so I didn’t have to explain. Laziness on my part.

Morning Paul . Thanks for the welcome .
I did not realise how much red there is up here until I looked at the map , i had already brought the drone by then . Luckily we are just outside the zone , although now and then the jets , helicopters and transporters pass over the house .
I still have not flown the mini 3 yet and managed to catch the flu Saturday so want to be alert for my first flight . Thanks for the thread
