Hello šŸ‘‹ From South East London

New member here! I thought I would join this group before buying my first drone. I got interested after buying the young one a little toy!

I’m thinking of buying the DJI Mini 4 Pro in the spring, with the remote control that has the screen.

I’ve been trying to get information from YouTube videos and I’m planning to obtain my license and operator ID online, if necessary, before buying.

I downloaded the drone app and find it slightly confusing, most areas are highlighted in yellow and say it may be a privacy and safety concern.

I live in Catford, Lewisham, South East London, right on the edge of the large red zone that covers Greenwich Park, etc., and would want to fly purely for recreational use in open spaces where possible.

My other half lives in Dartford, so I spend quite a lot of time there, and I saw on the map that Dartford Marshes has no restrictions, so I thought that might be a good starting point.

All of the parks near me have the yellow zones on them, I read online that Lewisham doesn’t allow flying in any of their parks.

Looking forward to getting to know more about the site and hopefully learning something.

Thanks,

Jon

From what i can gather there are no byelaws preventing flying in the parks. If there are no signs posted at the entrances or information boards for the parks stating that you can’t then you should be good to fly.

And welcome

Good evening @Jakenbad76 welcome along :+1:

Thanks

I’m just along the M4 in boring Berkshire

Hahah South East London is quite boring to, how is it there any nice places to fly unimpeded ?

Wasn’t in my clubbing days

In & around London can be a bit of a nightmare mate although many members on here have flown some good places in London which some are pinned on the clubs own drone scene which is very informative in finding places to fly :+1:

Thanks, yes it does seem to be a bit of a grey area in London I spent quite a lot of time in Dartford so I can easily get out into Kent a little bit ! Just looking at some YouTube videos of people flying on Dartford Marshes looks nice

Generally, red zones on drone apps mean its somehow restricted. Airport zones. Prisons. Alot of central london etc. So no flights without specfic authorisation.

Yellow zones ā€˜May raise concern’ are generally ok to fly in. Schools, parks etc. I’ld make sure i have appropriate ID with me and file a flight plan just in case.

Weirdy. Some areas are clear on drone apps, no signs are up in the area but if you check the local council websites they say its not allowed so its worth checking beforehand to avoid fun discussions with council reps.

Check the byelaws, or lack thereof.

That’ll trump any ā€œpoliciesā€ on council websites

Yup,

Black park for example. No big signs at the location saying drones are prohibited.

Maps class is as yellow. ā€˜May raise concerns’ but no prohibitions so it seems ok to fly.

The council website faq section said no drones in any of the council parks.

I wondered around the park and finally found a cheaply laminated water damaged print out of a section of byelaws saying model aircraft, including drones are prohibited.

I drove off their land and flew from there

EDIT
Thats weird. Posted byelaws say no drones but i just looked it up on the grey arrows byelaws thingy and the email response from the council said they dont have any byelaws related to drones. Lefthand/righthand?
I might go test the water at some point
