I’d suggest the beach for practicing; no restrictions except for a small area around Mayalls for the airport FRZ, and plenty of room at low tide for practicing. Pretty much empty at this time of year as well. Keep an eye out for gulls and oystercatchers and you’ll be ok (if you are in trouble with birds, hit sport mode and go straight upwards, full power, they can’t climb as fast as you). Don’t go out over the sea until you’ve got a good feel for how to control the drone.

Hi Paul,

Welcome. All members are amazing and if you require advice pop your question on and all will help.

and drone under 249g can be flown anywhere, including public places but be mindful of crowds of people.
I think also it was stated that you can buy Public liability insurance Its well worth getting and very cheap for the package you get. I bought it as soon as I joined.

Have fun and happy flying.

Hi Paul: most places along the coast and in the Marina (except those covered by the small exclusion zone around an army training centre); Singleton Park (where I fly regularly at the top (Sketty) end); and a good few other places. Never had a single person object though many have shown a friendly interest. Best wishes, Chris Norris

Hi Micron

Thanks indeed for your comments

For you to fly and decide where to go, did you look via the drone apps first and saw no restrictions and carried on or some other decision made?

Thanks

Hi Paul, There is so much information on drones that is incorrect. Even with Councils and their bye laws. The sub 250g drones are misunderstood by many including very often the police unless they are specialist drone officers. Spend a lot of time searching information including youtube guides on drone use. It is also worth youtubing the BlackBeltBarrister who provides some excellent guidance. There have been questions raised as to whether council bye laws can over-ride the CAA who control and manage air space; I think this may still to need to be decided by a court case???. Go to the CAA to get your operator id which must be on the drone if it has a camera to be legal. Technically, as I understand it, you do not need a flyer ID for sub 250g but go the the CAA website and take the test and obtain a flyer ID which is free and it proves you have basic knowledge of the drone rules. It is even worth a look at some of the auditors such as DJ Audits and DJE audits on youtube as they are always testing the authorites on drone use; but don’t take them as the law and regard as entertaining. I am also a newbie and there is a lot of confusing stuff to get your head around. so just immerse yourselve and take your time. I took my CofC just to make sure I had a decent knowledge to be able to challenge the Bull *********, of which there are many!! I even took my EU equivalent of the Flyer ID and registered my drone in the EU!!! Stay with it, it will be worthwhile. Lots of conflcting stuff and opinions to work you way through! but you will get there. Enjoy!!

I’ve not seen any local authority byelaws that try to govern the airspace above council land.

It is absolutely not :exploding_head:

The beach is a huge open area at low tide, though it more or less disappears at high tide; free tide table apps are are available to download. It stretches from West Pier at the river mouth round to The Knab in Mumbles, and there are numerous places from which it can be accessed. I should mention that there is a further small area of FRZ near the prison.

I have to agree with the comments about ‘auditors’; whether you find them entertaining or not is your own business (I don’t) but they do not promote socially responsible flying and are a very bad example to set you. They tend to be people with points to prove, and deliberately fly provocatively in order to trigger responses from authorities and security people who are only doing their jobs; I find them quite despicable but they are usually not behaving illegally. Their antics reflect very badly on the rest of us, though.
