Interesting NOTAMs / Flight Reports / temporary flight restriction zones

It’s hard to make out place names on that black & white map, but no, it doesn’t look like what is now on drone scene. The very large blue circle covering all of Central Scotland that was there yesterday, has been replaced by several blue circles, although they are still pretty big.

This sometimes happens if the data supplied to Altitude Angel isn’t all that it should be. The drone maps illustrate a bigger area than is actually the case. So worth referring to that BMFA map or checking to see if the area on DS updates after a day or two.

Or you can plot the coordinates on a map yourself. Just kidding.

Ok just draw a big circle over Scotland, job done let’s go home

This frequently happens with some of the NOTAMs over the English channel, which are intended to cover large UAS operating out at sea, but appear in Altitude Angel’s data as big circles covering large parts of Kent. They claim it’s because the data their given is “dumb” and doesn’t properly reflect what’s in the flight restriction regulations (in this case the source of all this is SI 2021/1068).

It doesn’t really matter whether it’s the fault of CAA, NATS, Altitude Angel - collectively they should sort this out.

I’m going away for a few days next week down south to Devon on the northern coast and was checking drone scene for some places to fly if the weather allows and I came across this:

It seems a flight restriction zone has been placed over some privately owned sand dunes (BRAUNTON BURROWS)

So my question is have the owners paid the CAA to put the flight restriction in place? if they have that’s a slippery slope and spells disaster for the hobbyist drone flyer… every land owner who has an issue with drones can buy a FRZ over their land…

What makes you think that Dean?
Maybe it’s army training, they use the Devon beaches a lot

Because its privately owned? Surely it would be military owned if it was for training? I don’t know that’s why I’m asking if anybody has any ideas.

I have a military gun range by me. It’s just a case of check on the govt website to see when the firing times are. Probably something similar for this maybe?

Yeah it’s a good shout to be fair, just seems strange that it’s privately owned though.

More info here: Braunton Burrows - Braunton - Visit North Devon

It’s owned by the Christie Estate. Just seems odd that privately owned land has a FRZ over it.

The site is currently leased by the Ministry of Defence from the Christie Devon Estates Trust (see Tapeley Park). The area is closed for 10 days per year for military training. The fact that it is so difficult to navigate makes it ideal for land-based exercises, although the sandy conditions are useful to all disciplines. The Royal Air Force sometimes use Saunton Sands to practice STOL beach landing and take off with the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. The Royal Marines also occasionally use the beach to practice amphibious landings.

Simple Google search turned up this wiki article. No conspiracy between rogue CAA enforcers and shady civilians involved.

I’m not sure what the big circle centered on Glasgow is all about. I assume it’s a fly with caution advisory as it’s close to the NOTAM areas

It’s not a fly with caution, it’s an official No Fly Zone due to COP26.

FRZ

Not to be confused with the shit DJI makes up

It is totally different to Aeronautical Information Circular M 091/2021 issued on 21 Oct 2021 which has Areas A to G listed.

So where is the official No Fly Zone published?

Now i understand why i cant fly in much of Fife as just seen pics taken from spottrs hill at Raf Leuchars with a pair of C17 Globemaster’s unloading the American Presedential helicopter and i take it most of west fife is due to police and military aircraft flying about for Cop 26.

Hi 16sport yes unfortunately this is same here in Edinburgh and the Central belt
