I was unaware of that fact. I assume they just do an RTH?

No, they complete the mission. This is why people plan their mission to start and finish where they started it - i.e. just beside the pilot.
For example, this mission to film the Almond Valley viaduct:
looks like this in the planning stage:
That detailed clump of data in the middle looks like this close up:
and has the starting (1) and end (11) points close together over the layby where I parked the car (PoI5).

Iām missing something ā¦
I know this with my M1P. Many missions using Litchi in the last 4+ years.
So - why?
Whatās different about āmost modern DJI modelsā?
For your drone and my Mavic Air, the flight program (i.e. the sequence of waypoints) is entirely uploaded to the drone from the smartphone (via the controller). It takes a couple of seconds to do this, and then you press the Start button. The drone navigates its own way to the mission start point, then immediately starts the mission. (In theory, if you didnāt want to watch the flight on your smartphone, you could actually turn off the controller* - I donāt recommend this!)
However, for more recent DJI drones, the sequence of waypoints is not uploaded at all. Instead, the smartphone sends signals via the controller as if the operator was controlling the was moving the sticks on the remote control at the time. (Around these parts, this method is called āvirtual sticksā). (And this time, if the operator were daft enough to turn the controller off, the drone would immediately engage the DJI Return-to-Home system).
There are explanations of this in other threads, and speculation on why modern drones require āvirtual sticksā and donāt allow autonomous flight. The most cogent explanation offered is that DJI want to avoid sales restrictions imposed by governments fearful of autonomous flight: our laws and guidance in the UK are focused around close control and observation by the pilot.
(* a further reason to leave the controller on is that whilst the waypoints (with their heights) are uploaded to my drone, the camera rotation and aircraft yaw around points-of-interest are not uploaded - they are sent from the controller to the aircraft. Therefore, if you do lose contact with the drone during a Litchi mission, you are likely to be very disappointed with parts of the film you make - see my YouTube video referred to above for an example of this).
That could have been reduced to ā¦
Which is all thatās needed as the explanation of the difference.
So - as I asked initially ⦠in relation to āthe newer DJI dronesā ā¦
⦠and Iām still assuming the newer drones just RTH on loss of connection?
Wasnāt the virtual sticks thing just a limitation of the Mini 1 due to its small onboard processor?
Has anyone tried a mission on a Mini 2 or Air 2S?
All new drones that use the fly app use Virtual Sticks and if the signal is lost will return to home/hover or land depending on which setting you have selected

Thanks for the confirmation
I was wondering what their definition of new/modern was, good to know that everything using Fly is virtual-stick based, makes it much easier to work out compatibility
(It also makes it a crock of shit - but thatās DJIās fault, not Litchiās)
Is it possible to tell Litchi for either Follow or Track mode to use the current position of the drone or does it always need those values entering manually? I thought it would so I went through the parameters too quickly the first time. The drone was positioned over the sea but I very soon realised my error when it started heading towards the promenade houses.

Ok, so Iāve bitten the bullet and downloaded Litchi for my Mavic Air 1ā¦just got to wait for the current storms to clear off!
My question is that I have the app on my Android phone, at a cost of Ā£21.99ā¦will I have to spend another (Ā£19.99) to get it on my Amazon Fire tablet?
I think I have seen a similar question on another forum where a guy was very upset as he had to buy the app again for an iOS installation so I guess Iām in the same boat.
Anyone else had this issue?
Thanks all.

Yes, you will.
A bit late now but you could have installed the Amazon App Store on your phone and bought Litchi from Amazon, thereby enabling it on all your Android devices

Thing is I only have Android phone and Fire Tablet, Iām a bit confused as I thought Android and Fire Tablets used different OS.
I can see Litchi in my Amazon shopping app, it says available for download but no button to hit?
Itās prob not a real issue as rarely use tablet anyway to fly.
As it is Iāve asked for refund as only downloaded a few hours ago, Google says I can get a refund within two hours of purchase, I am over that so may not get it, if I do then Iāll look at buying via Amazon but still unsure if Litchi would then work on Android phone and Fire Tablet with just one purchase.
Which Fire tablet is it? Is it suitable / compatible?
I donāt know why they might not let you download it unless your Fire uses a really old version of Android?

If youāre eligible for a refund, you get it straight away. If not you need to contact Google. Find the transaction then raise a refund request against it. Theyāre usually quick with their decision. If that fails then contact Litchi quoting the transaction number.
Thanks Doodler, Google saying thereās a two hour window after purchasing app to get a refund, the request went in about three hours after purchase so itās being considered.
As my previous post, if no refund no great worry as use phone far more than tablet but still unsure if I purchase through Amazon, will the app work on Android and Fire Tablet as as far as I know they different OS.
Maybe Tablet is Android but I didnāt think it was.
You could always try side-loading the .apk
Itās a fairly recent Fire HD 8 8th generation running Fire OS 7.3.2.2 installed 9/12/2021 so itās up to date. Specs say itās running Amazon version of Android (Nougat)
Just to add to the confusion (on my part) I can find Litchi via Google Play on the Fire and it says installed on my phone, but itās also offering to allow me to install it on another tablet of mine that is far too big to use when flying. Itās also saying that that tablet was last used todayā¦well it wasnāt and itās 20 miles away in a drawer!
Oh dear, sorry to drag this outā¦the Litchi details say itās available on all my devices, and shows my phone and the larger tablet, but doesnāt show the Fire!
I have no idea what side loading .APK is!
Hereās a link to download the latest version Android Litchi app installation file. (Long press and select download.)
Download it on the device you want to install it.
Open it ⦠and it will probably take you to a few ādo you really want to?ā popups and settings permission changes ⦠then it will install.
It may, or may not, work.
No promises.
If it doesnāt work, you can just uninstall.
