Hi everyone - I bought a (lightly) used DJI Mini 4 Pro Fly More Combo back in November. I met someone in the local park who was flying one, and was so impressed by the videos he showed me that I went out and bought the same model. I’ve since found out that the local park requires specific permission to take off and land on their land, and they don’t tend to give it unless for commercial work for their own purposes. Oh well.
It’s my first drone, so I have very little experience flying it so far. Roll on the better weather.
I’ve preferred pre-programmed waypoint missions so far (using waypointmap.com), since I’m not confident on the sticks yet, and have experimented with making orthophotos and 3D models (using aerialmodel.com). Looking forward to getting some more practice on the sticks and building my confidence.
Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.
There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.
We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.
And finally, if you are new to drones and wondering what it’s all about, have a look at Resources for a beginner.
Hi, thanks. It’s Wollaton Park I’m referring to - this is on their webpage. I can appreciate that there’s potential for deer and other wildlife to be spooked by a drone, but clearly the Mini 4 Pro is so small that the wildlife would need very keen eyesight and hearing once it’s above, say 50m. I’m aware that I could take off and land outside the park boundary, but the interesting stuff is far enough away that I’d lose sight of my drone. I’ve seen quite a few drones flying over the park in the summer, so I know I’d be unlikely to get caught, but while I’m still learning I’m happy not to take any risks.
ahh yea so wollaton hall if they see you on there they will tell you to stop etc specially the rangers, id say just go bramcote park its less hassel lol, or any area with an open area just make sure you look at dronescene to saee where you can aand cant fly it saves the legal hassle too.
I followed the links to the FOI response, and no, there are no byelaws. The FOI response refers people as follows:
"It is a legal framework that Drones have to operate to in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority. Any guidance that we give on this issue we refer straight to the Gov.uk web site (as below):
Drones: how to fly them safely and legally - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) The Drone and Model Aircraft Code | UK Civil Aviation Authority (caa.co.uk)"
with the following statement, which looks like their summary of the rules, and which doesn’t tell the whole story as far as I’m aware..
"They should not be flown in congested areas (i.e. Parks) or within 50m of people or close to residential areas. Drone operators should also comply with licensing requirements and possible GDPR legislation if recording images. Ideally for larger drones and ‘commercial’ filming we’d want to provide written permission and ensure all paperwork in in order. If we are not aware of an activity taking place, we have limited scope to enforce or take any action."
Anyway, CAA rules once you’re in the air, basically.
As an aside, if I was to take off outside their land, then ‘follow it in’ on foot towards the interesting bits that I want to film, then follow it back outside their boundary before landing, would that contravene the rule about taking off and landing on private land? Is operating it from that private land implied within the take-off and landing rules?
