Recovering drone from a tall tree

Ok so I now have authorisation to go back to the land up top and take the tree surgeon with me so hopefully he will get back to me. The wife is in hospital tomorrow so it will be Wednesday when we go so watch this space… Who knows… maybe we will be reunited. If tree guy does not come then I have to work out another option of getting it down… Not sure exactly how this is going to go yet or what projects I can do to get it but going to look into this echoing head of mine and see if I can come up with some ideas of what to take with me.

Fortunately, not much rain forecast the next couple of days.

But those that know me will tell you I don’t believe forecasts.

We went down today (another 160 miles) and did not see it. The land owner was busy so did not get over to give us access to the part where the drone is at, so today was a look around with drone and binoculars and I did not trust my sense of distance to get the other drone too close to the trees. Not that experienced yet (hence losing the first one). Amazes me how some of these drone people can fly through such short gaps and so close to things, I am no where near that sort of skill. I was going to go down today (1st February) but the land owner is not available and nor is the tree guy. However the footage I sort of got may tell me the drone is not that high from the ground but as we are looking at it from right down below the ground level it is on, it looks high. However when the drone is up there at what we believe is the same height, it then tells us that it could be near ground. However as we are yet to see it on the drone picture we are not able to exactly specify it if needs a tree surgeon or just a stick n hook. Just so paranoid at taking the drone close enough to see and when it does it’s wierd jump I am scared that we will be looking to find another one. The drone is in Glouster GL12 and we are in Brum so it is a bit of a drive to go there not to see anything. The story continues…

As for the tree surgeons. One said he has a drone, know how it feels and will do it for the price of the fuel and one said £300. First one busy. I mean I have a tree guy up here but I am sure he will not drive to Gloucester. So gotta try to find people down there.

Wish I knew someone down there with a drone and a lot of experience and a kind heart. The fact I know very fre drone people being so new at it is a no. But at least you get to read about what next. Lucky on the control for the missing drone are the files of what the drone saw. I can see it’s crash and I can also see what it last saw. I believe once I report it fully missing DJI will just dis allow it to take off if it was found but not sure anyone gonna find it yet.

Until next time…

What Wayne @SparkyFPV says

It would be infinitely easier if you signed up for Airdata, it is free. And it is very simple to do.

Not sure if you have the DJI RC (Mini 3 Pro) or the basic N1 remote using a phone (Mini 3) .

Regardless, once you’ve synced your flights to Airdata, we can help locate where the drone is.

I am 30 minutes from Gloucester and have some experience with retrieving drones from tall trees.

Around Wotton-under-Edge? Where exactly?

@clinkadink, Chris if you manage to get the air data, which I know has been asked as above & @Foley cant make it down, if you need a second set of eyes, I’m happy too pass through & make sure your ok & try too help out, I was going to head that way for a POI for the RTF, so if the timings right I could possibly kill two birds with one stone, let me know if you need me, happy too help.

I feel another epic retrieval is in the making here. Hope there’s going to be another happy ending and we get to see the footage. Good luck guys. :+1:

@Foley Russ, I’d take up Chris’ offer of assistance, he’s experienced at this!

On the bbc news :scream::joy:

It is at the Diving Place, I was filming my old neighbour diving.

Knowing the location of the drone is not a problem, it is just getting the land owner to agree to go over the fence. When we lost it, we pressed find drone. We could hear it for a while but just could not see it. As it got that little bit darker, in it’s last bit of battery I was able to see the lights flash in the tree. However, I only saw it when I stood in an exact place so I guess the light was shielded by a branch.

An easy way to explain is if you were looking for your phone at a football stadium and you knew within a few seats where it was but you were only allowed to look from the other side of the stadium. You know where it is but it could be shielded by seats. However it would be easier to take a drone over as there are not random branches everywhere.

Also the tree looks higher from the ground as we were very low down and looking up was deceiving. When I took another drone up to the height it did actualy look like it was a lot lower. So once he says it is ok to go up there we can, the neighbours would report anyone trying to gain entry and it would need to be done in the day with safety in mind however it looks like the brambles could be a bigger issue then the tree itself. Land owner said he would try to go over later in the week so I asked him last night if he can tell me when and maybe we can meet at the same time and it should be over and done with in a short while.

In response to the control, it is with built in screen.

I also have a file on the remote showing the last thing the drone could see when in the tree. It helps as I can cross reference a few things between the drone and me and behind me so I can work out pretty much where it is and how deep by what it can see me through. So all in all, the location is not that much of a problem, it is just a busy guy who is not available to get over to the drone straight away and as we are a distance from it, it is not like I can just pop over at a moments notice.

So whilst airdata is a great idea and something that I will into at some point, in this occasion it was not actually going to be used for location of the craft. We know where it is… which is more annoying. I gotta say that if I had not seen the lights flashing, I would have not even begin to know where to look without the air data and would have done it in a moment.

I am guessing after a week in a tree the drone will need to go back to DJI for repair. I guess they like the cold as much as me and that is not a lot.

I will try to find out when it is possible for me to be onsite and post it here. It may be pretty simple to find but it is down to the land owner and up to now they have been so helpful. He even wanted to see if they can get it down to avoid any tree surgeons costs. So I will let you know when it is good for me to go and check with them if they are happy for others to join. Just gotta tread careful as the health and safety it falls under means at any time he could pull the plug and turn any attempt into tresspass. Right now they are being more then helpful, it is just that from the side I am on would mean a cliff face that is ready to fall where as the other side is a over a small fence and fight a few brambles to locate the tree.

@Foley i know others have mentioned it, so sorry too sound like a broken record, if you set up Airdata & get the flight info & share with the guys above, they are very good @ it & can pretty much pin point it within a few feet albeit well, just saves you time & hassle on your return, your more than likely then have a better accurate plan too retrieve it. :crossed_fingers:t2:

Is Chris clinkadink.
As soon as I get authorisation to go over to the other side then I will let people know

Yes happy to do that once I have spoken to the land owner. It may upset him if a pile of people turn up on a drone hunt. Once I have spoken to him it will be ok. Communication has been via e-mail and he only gets it late at night as during the day time others intercept it. I will however get the air data. Just got to check into that. I am not saying I will not do it so please do not thing I am being awkward but if I was to do the wrong thing towards the land owner then he could make it impossible to retrieve without some sort of law breaking. So just doing things in a way that I think will hopefully work.

I thank you all for the offers of help and I will no doubt take you up on it. Just want to keep them happy on site. I am hoping maybe tomorrow or friday may be the best one.

So please bear with me on this one, I know you are all trying to help and that means a lot to me. I am a bit of an over thinker and just weighing up every situation. I was feeling sick right up until the guy said we could go over and it was like a weight lifted. Ok the tree guy let me down but hopefully will not need him.

So I do thank each and every one of you who have messaged and like a quiz show shouting the answer at a bad contestant on a game show with the answer. I do get it with the air data but if you can bear with me on that. I am not saying no, just overthink things. Bit of a curse really so hope you understand. I will however look into the air data today and work out how it is done. Guessing all the data is stored in the control and not the drone as that would be daft ha ha. THanks

Yep proves how new I am to forums… click on profile… Never been a forum person and this is the first one in my life i have ever joined. As soon as I need to sign up to a forum I think… Naaaa lol

Yes, Chris is clinkadink. Today at least.

Yes, you know where it is … but …

… and the rest of us don’t know where it is :confounded:

And so, in order for us to better assist, please can you …

  1. Sign up for a free account with Airdata
  2. Add your Airdata token to the Fly app settings on your DJI RC
  3. Connect your DJI RC to your wifi so it’s online
  4. Go back to Airdata > Account > Flight Retrieval > DJI Login … and hit sync

Detail guidance here.

Please do set up airdata - it will benefit you and those trying to help.

Not too sure why you can’t or won’t but most of us use it to record our flights.

If I was passing Gloucester, I would also help. But not planning to for a few days as I am a good hour or so south

@clinkadink Wondered how you did it on a DJI RC :+1: Get airdata that is!

The only issue is that you need to connect the RC to the internet upload the flight to DJI, then sync on airdata.

Whilst this will all happen eventually automatically, I often want to see mine straight away.

If you get your Airdata ASAP then your possibly ahead of the game & more prepared, is what everyone is pretty much saying.
I am anyway
