As it happens I do have written permission from the council, following a demo I did for them over 10 years ago (!), but don’t actually believe that is required in order to fly there. On this very web site I’m sure I read a FoI request made to the local council, EHDC, the answer to which confirmed that no drone policy exists for council-run sites, prohibitive or otherwise !
Here’s the actual sign !
However, I do note that our council is in the process of merging with several others to form a sort of ‘super-council’ (bit like the Galactic Empire in Star Wars would do), and perhaps they have already absorbed the policies of neighbouring authorities ? Clanfield, neighbouring village, HATES the drones for example, and tries to ban them everywhere within it !)
Needless to say I have been flying at PFCG and surrounds for years and years and it remains my ‘home ground’, where I go for easy, relaxing flights and testing things.
Yes, we would have to check with the club, and it would only be polite to ask, and yes, of course we wouldn’t want to be there on match days.
The parking situation there is totally fine - several lay-byes on adjacent roads, and 2 car parks in relatively close proximity, both of which (I think) are free !
There are many positives to this site - the wide-open-ness of the space, the seclusion / isolation from both the lake and Heath and surrounding houses by 360 degree treeline, interesting trees, picturesque lake, mountainous hills in far background, interesting town views from higher up, plenty of room for multiple flyers, not ‘too’ populated by pedestrians. Proximity to interesting things going on over on the Heath etc etc (fairgrounds on Bank Holidays etc) I ce cream / drinks nearby (admittedly at rather exorbitant prices and susceptible to seagull theft !)…
Of course there are negatives too…
Quite a lot of low flying private aircraft, some notably under 500 ft, (and more than our fair share of army stuff !) an enormous amount of birds, of all types, though most stay by the lake, which we would avoid crossing ideally (it would be beyond VLOS anyway).
Lot of free-running dogs who don’t respect landing zones…
So you know, swings and roundabouts… (not literally, though there is a playground on the main drag across the heath!)
