It’s December, time to release another bunch of updates to Drone Scene!

:christmas_tree: :gift:

Missed the November updates? Fear not, they’re all listed here.

So without further ado - on with the updates!

• New Feature: Elevation tool

  • Requested by @McSteamy2010

  • Need to know the height of a piece of land or area on the map?
    – We can tell you!

  • Simply click on the Elevation tool to turn it on (the up arrow on the right hand side)
    – Click somewhere on the map
    – Wait approx 1 second
    — because we need to fetch the elevation for that location
    – The elevation value is then displayed in the top left corner

Screen Shot 2020-12-13 at 20.19.30

  • Finished investigating the lay of the land?
    – Tust click on the Elevation button again to turn the tool off again!

• New Feature: Remember your Map Layer preferences

  • Requested by @milkmanchris

  • Since the dawn of time Drone Scene has always defaulted to a specific set of Map Layers
    – Some were on by default
    — Eg: Flight Restriction Zones
    – Others were off by default
    — Eg: DJI Geozones

  • This was bit of a pain as you’d have to tick/untick individual map layers on each visit

  • We now remember your last-selected map layers

  • We also now remember your Basemap (Road, Satellite, Dark, etc)

  • Not only that, but these settings are now stored against your user profile
    – This means that your preferred map layers will follow you from any browser, on any device to any other browser or device, automatically :bowing_man:

• User Experience: Disable the tick boxes in the Map Layers panel if not logged in

  • If you were not logged in to DS you could still click the Flight Reports layer, the NOTAMs layer, DJI layer, etc.
    — Nothing happened when clicked, but people expect something to happen

  • These Layers are now crossed out and a message added informing people they need to log in to use them

• User Experience: Widen the DJI GEO Zones “search” radius

  • Some DJI flight restrictions were not immediately visible
    – Eg: You needed to have an airport in view to then be able to see the DJI bow-tie restrictions

  • Now you don’t
    – If it’s nearby, we’ll display it

• User Interface: Use better text-formatting for location details

• User Interface: Display confirmation box when clicking on Logout

  • It was really annoying to click on Logout accidentally!
    Really annoying…

  • We now ask you to confirm you really want to Logout

• User Interface: Only allow filters/searches by Member if logged in

  • We don’t allow searches on members on the forum if not logged in
    – This just follows suit

To explain a bit further:

If logged in, I get an “All Members” drop down list / search filter available to me:

If I’m not a GADC member and not logged in, I now cannot filter by member, the drop down list vanishes:

All other routes to the member filter have also been updated too.

Eg, here in blue, both Drumsagard and stubbyd are clickable links to apply a member-filter:

But if I’m not logged in, their name still appears, but minus a clickable search / filter link:

• Bug fix: Long words break the layout on mobile

  • Reported by @Crackerjack

  • Some locations added by members had references to PDFs and other long web references
    – When viewed on mobile they overflowed the width of the site
    – Which in turn pushed the burger menu and other objects out of the right hand side of the screen

• Bug fix: Drop down filters do not work if viewing a specific Location

  • Reported by @OzoneVibe

  • If you were viewing any location, then tried to apply a filter, it all went spectacularly wrong
    – The issue was caused by the exact same bug last month re only being able to login when on the home page :man_facepalming:

Bug reports, new feature requests, etc? As always, just shout

Noticed a problem close to home. Find Heysham Harbour and zoomed out you’ll see a marker that there’s 2 flight locations hovering over 2 nuclear power stations. As you zoom in, the 2 disappears and no flight locations appear, no surprise there. Zoom out again and slide up to Morecambe, another 2 marker but if you zoom in there they split out at the appropriate zoom level to show flight sites.

Can you zoom to the area in question and click the Share button (bottom right) please @Crackerjack and paste the long URL here for me?

Oh that’s on the DJI GEO Zones layer, rather than a location someone has added

It’s not a data set we have any control over I’m afraid.

I’ve no idea what it is either, I’ll see what I can find out and will get back to you.

I’ve seen them before over airports too, Gatwick for example has the same artefacts in the DJI dataset:

Brilliant work as always @PingSpike!

Must be beginning to run out of room for improvement!

Oh … on the page Where can I fly my drone in the UK? - Drone Registration it implies you only need to register as an operator if your drone is >250g. As you know, this also applies to drones below that range with a camera, unless they are a toy. This is probably the best page to link to now:

https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/registration-requirements

The wording on the page about height limitations could also do with an update as per:

https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/where-you-can-fly

With the new rules, is it worth adding a new field, Drone Category? Plenty of now legal places that can be flown with the Minis only. This includes back gardens so might also be worthwhile amending the guidance :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

If it could be filtered/searched on this field, Legacy A1 <250 would show all, etc…

I don’t really want other people taking off from my back garden

Hi. When switching to hybrid map I lose the base map completely. This happens in chrome and firefox, but I haven’t been able to test in Internet Explorer (Edge).
Does anyone know of an alternative map (google?) that would be able to show drone restrictions and have a satellite hybrid map.
Thank you.

Jerry
