Waverley Abbey Meet-up | £30 per pilot | Sunday 29th September

Good: Location is great for both camera, FPV drone and it is fenced off.
Bad: Need both a flyer ID, and Operator ID and Insurance
Ugly: There is a cost of £30 per pilot

Intro
Want to chat drones ?
Want to drink tea and watch drones ?
Want to build confidence of flying ?
Want to try other drones ?
Want to just fly and not by the only drone flyer ?
Darn it I just want to fly my drone!

Waverley Abbey
Waverley Abbey in Surrey was the very first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order.

Have a look at posts on Last time in July or Search for Waverley Abbey. It a great location. It is accessible for all mobilities - I am expecting to have access via the large gate (NB: There is a couple of pathways leading to it). There is free-parking and there is a nearby cafe within walking distance with toilets.

It is an English Heritage site. People have taken off from a public right of way and flown around the wonderful abbey. However if I am arranging a meet-up I like to have people relaxed and confirm that there will be no aggravation when flying. We have an written agreement with English Heritage to TOAL from their land.

I wish it was free and wish only an operator ID was required. Please post reasons why this is not fair, not reasonable or how to get the cost lower on this thread: National Trust / English Heritage

Requirements:-

  • Both flyerID & Operator ID
  • Make / model of drone(s) to be used;
  • Drone public liability insurance; example
  • £30 per person flying a drone- [a 20% reduction on standard drone fee]
    • Paid by 15th September.

Spectators are free - but please direct message me. Everyone welcome. FPV’er, Camera Drones or even people who not a got a drone yet. No drone police, but do not be an arsehole rule applies.

Please contact me by direct message if you are eligible for benefits [Benefits - Citizens Advice], wish to attend and the cost is prohibitive. Please contact me by direct message if you wish to waive the 20% reduction to cross subsidise any people where the cost is prohibitive.

Please indicate in the poll if you are attending this meet-up. .

Poll

Data Collection For Pilot Attending

There is flight plans etc etc that I need to prepare, but at the moment I need people who are attending to complete the required details:-

I will contact you about payment (Bank transfer), nearer to the time when English Heritage sends me an invoice. I will delay paying English Heritage until we have a good weather forecast, usually about 7 days prior.

Fenced Off
It is fenced off, I plan to set-up next to the gate and tape the entrance gate off and put some sign out. So I/We can act as bouncers. If anyone has a gazebo it would be ideal and we can use just inside the gate as the TOAL point.

English Heritage
English Heritage have given us permission (subject to IDs, Insurance and cost) to TOAL from their land. They wish me to add in the safety briefing, that they wish us to fly around the site ruins not inside. They wish me to add in they do not grant permission for you to fly across the water and the house as these are not our property.
Note: I am sure everyone is familiar with Where can I fly my drone in the UK? - Good 2 Go - Can I fly my drone here?
Note: I am sure everyone is familiar with CAA and who controls air space.

Thanks @bmsleight - you rock! Will be fun to fly this place again, with a bit more trust in my skill than last time I was there (errr - no sorry - never went there!) - look forward flying OUT of the buildings as per instructions! And we will make sure we don’t bother (visually, cannot talk about the sounds) the owners and occupants of the manor nearby behind the little pond… I am happy there are no conditions for the local cows being annoyed by the quads!.. pfew! close call!

I will add a Tarpaulin to the payment, as a private joke

Sadly, I cannot make this one :pensive: Hope it’s as good as the last time!

Cool - with have a couple of DJI Mini 2 [ @Stomper and @Kidsgalore ] as well as lots of FPV drones.

Right -

The weather looks ok?

I going to start asking for cold hard cash.
However, I am going to leave it to the last moment gte the invoice form Engligh Heritage and pay them - so we will know firmer details.

Final call for people to joi by voting in pole and filling out the data collection.

To avoid confusion, weather shown is for Saturday 28th, meetup is Sunday 29th.

Weather forecast is poor. I have asked English Heritage if by next Wednesday (25th) the weather forecast is still poor, would we be able to move the booked date from Sunday 29th September to Saturday 5th October.

I am not going to pay any English Heritage invoices until we are clear on weather.

Are we good to go for Sunday? If it moves to Saturday 5th Oct, I have a problem, I work :worried:

Weather forecast looks good for Sunday, so yes.

Just waiting for a response from English Heritage to my paperwork submission and an invoice from them.

A few of you might be able to hit the “I’ve flown here” button on this one:

Grovelling apologies but I have only just seen about this meet. I’d love to pay the fee and join the group if it is not too late. Totally understand if I’ve missed out this time, of course.

I will try but unlikely.

Can you fill in the data request (second post above)

Thanks a lot. I have done so but please don’t go to any extra hassle. If I can’t fly, no problem but I’ll come along and say ‘Hi’ anyway if that’s OK.

I now got the PDF - I am trying.

I’ve been chatting to Brendan and get cc’d on the EH emails (only the ones that don’t have people’s personal details!), so a quick update here on his behalf while Brendan tries to do his actual 9-5 job and sort things with EH.

Long story short, we’re on for Sunday. I look forward to seeing you all there; personally aiming for an 8am start and weather to determine finish time.

Brendan is tying up the last of the paperwork but after a period of quiet from EH it’s all go again (I believe including the late addition of @nigelw - EH seem amenable in this case in their emails, so subject to paperwork I think he’ll have that confirmed one way or the other soon).

Weather is looking reasonable on most forecasts - might not be the beautiful day we had last time, but sure looks flyable:

(met office)

(bbc)

(uav forecast)

In the last image there, it looks like winds might get gusty late afternoon so some of the smaller drones may struggle later in the day, but at least we’re not expecting the r-word until after we’ll have left for the day if forecasts and luck hold.

I believe Brendan and I were there for around 8am to setup last time; I intend to do the same on Sunday but don’t want to put words in his mouth - am sure he’ll post again in due course.

Gentle reminder - we won’t be letting in the public enmasse like last time so Brendan can hopefully get some actual flight time in :joy: so if you missed the deadlines but/or want to come down and hang out/spectate, please let @bmsleight know ahead of time so we let the right people in
