Hi all,
I’m reasonably new to all this so still making sure I’m staying within “the rules”.
I live in Woking, Surrey and have been looking at various places in the area to fly. I’ve been quite surprised at how many great places there are, but there’s one place that I thought would be completely out of the question without ATC permission - within the Fairoaks FRZ.
I spotted on Facebook that a someone had taken some photos over the McLaren Technology Centre which is an amazing looking site. To me it looks like it’s bang in the FRZ and less than 1km from the runway?
I explained that I was interested in flying there too but thought that it was in the FRZ and his response was “It’s Class D air space, with rams done, notams checked, vfr’s checked, pfco, insurance in place it’s at my risk. I didn’t enter restricted airspace based on heights. As a heads up it’s a complete no fly zone there atm due to the passing of the Duke probably at least for the 8 days. Or fly a sub 250g drone My operations manual is around 60 pages long that I had to submit to the CAA for approval and I follow it.”
I’m really keen on being able to go there and similar places, so if there’s some sort of certification that will allow me, then I’m up for it, but I just can’t believe it’s right!? I’m currently flying a mini 2 so actually do fall under his suggested 250g, but to me that’s still not right when it comes to the FRZ?
Really fascinated to see what people think on this. To me it seems totally clear, but he seems to sure that it makes me wonder how I could be so wrong!
Thanks all.
