Where/How best to attach your CAA Operator ID label?

What’s the best way to put your operator’s ID onto my drone?

Use a label maker if you have one? if not amazon or Lidl/Aldi tend to have some good ones for around £10

Hi couple of things to bear in mind

• DONT mark your machine permanently your Operator ID will be issued each year by way of payment AND will Change each year (crazy I know)

  • DONT put it on any easily removable part such as a battery Top it must be on the Maine machine body

  • Do remember it’s your Operator ID NOT Flyer ID that you need to display

Mine Mavic Air - eBay - Oil slick Silver Vinyl - Pain in the bum to fit

Depending on your view of Privacy you may be quite happy to have it in public sight just like a car registration is
Or
Perhaps you would feel more comfortable not displaying it to all eyes to view in which case many are opting to install on the inside of the battery compartment the ‘rule’ it must be accessible Without a tool (Clip our Batteries) Fingers are not considered to be a tool in this instance !

Vinyl type Labels seem popular However a good old fashioned Dyna Tape machine producing embossed raise print will possible be more durable and generally IF you can get hold of one are cheaper than the electronic battery powered modern ones

Hi all,

Where do I need to put the operated id on the bottom of the aircraft or the top or does it not matter?

Sorry for the newbie question and thanks in advance.

They’re a little off centre I know, but easily removable and weather proof.

Oh… nice ID card.

Do the CAA still issue these?

Ned

They’re not issued by the CAA Ned.

Plenty on eBay and Amazon, just google “UK Drone Operator ID card”

Along with coupe of reminder labels on top to take the gimbal guard off and check compass. Terrible at remembering things these days.

Hi all,

Just wanted to share something that happened to me on my latest flight.

I was flying my Mavic Mini which I put a sticker on it with my Operator ID. During the flight however the sticker came off and shortly afterwards I stopped flying and packed the drone away and left. I did forget to go look for the sticker so it was left behind. Aside from littering I was wondering if this is something to worry about. You can say that I got a bit paranoid that somebody might find it, know what it is, and decide to fly their drones with my ID. I know it’s a long stretch of the imagination but theoretically possible.

So my questions to you are the following two:

  • Should I be worried about this?
  • How do you display the registration on your drone? I don’t think printing Dymo labels is good enough as they don’t seem to stick on the aircraft very well.

I’ve sent an email to the CAA to ask them about this to see what they advise but I haven’t heard back from the yet. When I do, I’ll update this thread so we all know what they had to say in case anyone else is interested.

Here is a bit of advice then - put your operator ID inside the battery compartment

Agreed, that’s where my sticker is.

I’m not sure what you used but at work (and home) I use a Brother label maker and labels have been on outside sockets/locks etc for years in all weathers and not come off !

Oh that makes total sense. Definitely won’t be flying off if it’s in there.

I thought that you had to always display the Operator ID when flying as per the Drone Code. Are you saying that as long as it is somewhere in the aircraft (even if it’s not visible from the outside) that has you covered?

@milkmanchris I used a Dymo printer of some description but I think the tape that’s in there is super old and potentially the adhesive is not as effective as it once was.

@iEvangelos if your Mavic Mini is still under 250g you don’t even need to register with the CAA, let alone attach stickers to your drone.

I’ve found that my 20 year old Dymo tape isn’t what it was.
