Out of curiosity I’d be interested to hear you real world review once you’ve tried them out.
I’ll second having a heads up just out of curiosity Chris👍.
I think I’ll remove the the range patch off the RC first. Then compare before and after
Yeh, it’d be intesteing that, real test .
Just out of curiosity again, how do you remove the patch off the goggles, only asking because, I’m sure it was on Madstec, he said once it’s on its on, regardless of if you remove the text file off the SD card.
I know I’ve updated my f/w a couple of times and nothing has changed.
Cheers Chris
Pass then. As that is what I thought was all that was needed.
I’ll try and find Ian’s vid, but I’m sure that’s the crack.
I know I’ve changed the SD card in the goggles and never replaced the text file, only with forgetting, and the result hasn’t sent me backwards range wise to when you couldn’t fly behind a twig without loosing transmission.
Unless Dji have tweakwd the fw for us CE guys and its made the signal strength better🤷♂️.
Give it a go anyway, see what happens.
Will do. They were posted yesterday, so may receive them today. I might actually do this:
- Test as-is, with the existing antennae and patch on
- Test with the existing antennae and the patch off (removed/card formatted)
- Test with the new antennae
Then post all 3 results.
I’ll take a look at mine in the morning, having a few flights on the beach, so I’ll take a card with the patch on and without. See what’s what😁
I’ve checked my set up with and without an SD card in. Transmission is still showing 3 channels under 40 mhz, with and without the card fitted with the ham file, so still in FCC👍
Here’s Ian’s vid from when the ham hack appeared…
No bother. FCC + new antennae = VLOS + 10 km
All at close proximity I hope, seeing as it’s the Avata👍
Nothing as exciting as Chris’s purchase.
But picked this up for the charger of my impending purchase.
So I final got one should be arriving tomorrow.
I’ve only ever used stick type controllers, as the kit I’ve got is comes with the motion controller, I suspect some of you were in the same boat. Question is do I need to get the FPV controller?
Oh and I apologise in advance for the daft questions I’m likely to ask over the coming weeks.
No such thing as a daft question round here, just make sure to use the search function first because more than likely you won’t have been the first one to have asked that question
Hi Jon, I was in the same boat as you when I first got my Avata, I hadn’t used one. Was sceptical .
First off it doesn’t replace the controller 2 (sticks) outright. It’s different. I’d actually say it’s easier to use than sticks, it’s very intuitive after only 5 or 10 minutes. Once you have that cracked, give the headtracking mode a go, slightly vomit inducing at first but stick with it .
The main difference is you can’t flip into manual mode like the cont. 2, you only have Normal and Sport. The other differences include no left and right, you can yaw and go forward, but no strafing left or right like on the sticks.
The other is no backwards.
There is a workaround using headtracking for both of the above, it’s quite easy after a bit of practice .
I have bought a cont. 2, just so I could give manual (acro) a go, and it’s totally worth it. Brilliant for learning acro with as you have a fail safe of switching into Normal or Sports mode if things go belly up or you get a bit jittery in manual. It ain’t easy at first, but believe me it’s worth it👍
I tried to put it in a nutshell for you, hope that helps mate👍.
By the way, have a look for the ‘ham’ mod, I think there’s a link in this thread, if not in the mods section. This will give you FCC mode, better signal. Dead easy to activate just put a file on the goggles SD card and your done👍.
You won’t regret buying an Avata:grin:
Very helpful mate, thank you.
I’ll, no doubt get the controller 2 but no immediate rush I think.
I’ve wanted to try FPV for years, can’t wait to give it a go.
Sadly it didn’t arrive today, for some unknown reason UPS managed to confuse Cheshire with Tamworth so it ended up in the wrong depot.
For anyone interested iin modifying one, 3.5” conversion, I believe there’s also a 2.9” on the way.

No worries Jon, glad to be of help👍
I wouldn’t be worried about the little wait longer, the weather up this end isn’t much cop for the next week mate. It’s worth the wait though , proper fun, much more than a camera drone and like you say it’ll get you into fpv with a few safety nets👍
Cheers for that link Jon, I’m defo looking into that new frame👍
