It’s an obvious use for a British icon :uk: in the nation’s capital city - dispense Italian :it: desserts!

And another one for today.

Bonus point if there is a mausoleum - Soane’s Mausoleum (1816)

Sir John Soane was one of the foremost architects of the Regency era, a Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, and a dedicated collector of paintings, sculpture, architectural fragments and models, books, drawings and furniture.

Coincidently this tomb was the inspiration for the design of the red telephone box. Information at Sir John Soane and the red telephone box | Sir John Soane's Museum

It’s good to get off my lardy arse and actually go out and learn something

@Challenges_Committee could I ask a question on hillforts? What counts as visual evidence for a hillfort? Is just a small hill with fields enoigh, given written evidence of what was there, or is there some sort of structure that has to be visible? Thanks.

Hillforts come in all shapes and sizes. Some are obvious like Maiden Castle in Dorset, some are visible only with oblique lighting.

The object of the exercise is for you to find a hillfort by use of the definitive Oxford University Hillforts Map or via Wikipedia as the Oxford source is sometimes flaky - see this post from @BadManners (Andrew):

If the picture you supply is of a slightlylumpy field because that is all that is there but it is documented as a hillfort you will get the same points as Cissbury Ring

Paulg0 got to ask was it easy getting permission to fly here? I’ve always wanted to film in London but with so many frz’s I’ve always given up on the idea.

Thanks for the very helpful reply :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s lots of areas that are fine especially with a sub 250g drone. Check on https://dronesafetymap.com for full infomation. EGR160 THE SPECIFIED AREA can be ignored as its for manned flight only. This leaves quite a lot of areas available.

The main places that have to be avoided are EGR157 HYDE PARK, EGR158 CITY OF LONDON, EGLW LONDON HELIPORT, EGLC LONDON CITY. There are other areas too, always check first.

It should be noted that currently DJI has locked a lot of unrestricted areas off and you have to apply to unlock which is a bit tedious but only seems to take them a few minutes.

Also you need to check with local councils for bylaws on taking off from their property (some parks) and a few boroughs that have public space protection orders.

There’s a good general guide at Safely and Legally Fly a Drone in London | 2023 Update.

I’m generally very over cautious and dont fly where theres lots of people around, or I find myself a tucked away corner to take off and land. I’ve never had any problems at all, the only attention I have evr got is positive genuine interest.

Try the excellent https://dronescene.co.uk

Turn on these three layers: Airspace Restrictions, Flight Restriction Zones, and NOTAMs.

Keep clear of the obvious Airports (Heathrow and London City Airport among others) and Heliport.

Keep clear of the Heliroutes (yellow snakes), Broadly speaking they are designed to keep helicopters over the Thames.

Read the NOTAMs (usually but not exclusively blue circles) and see if the dates and altitudes affect your plans.

It’s considered the big area called “The Specified Area” affects helicopters and not drones.

And then you’re just looking for a from which to take off that suits the weight of your drone (use Where can I fly my drone in the UK? - Good 2 Go - Can I fly my drone here?). Don’t use Royal Parks (there’s a special exception for an area in Richmond Park if it wouldn’t bother the deer there)

Taking most of that in to account, there lots of places to fly.

I TOALed from the green spot in one of these two photos:

All this info gleaned from searches of this forum.

Late addition: watch out for signal interference, and don’t rely on Return To Home feature (from a post a couple of weeks back)

Thanks for the very useful information guys, may we suggest any further posts be placed in a separate “Flying in London” thread in the Where to Fly Your Drone category?

I have a question about 21. Intermodal Containers 13- six or more (shipping containers)

Do they have to be in their original form or can they be converted to something else. For instance housing, construction site offices, shopping parks etc?

@group-challenges

Cheryl, having only skimmed the competition rules, thought it would be a grand idea to combine subjects 25 and 26

Who has submitted correct entries today? Click the Pic™ to go to the LEADERBOARD to see who has increased their score!

Nice idea, But then they wouldn’t be forty-foot intermodal containers but repurposed forty-foot intermodal containers.

We think we know where you are coming from - Containerville in East London for instance

They are offices. And even if they were accepted as containers you won’t be able to claim an all same colour, same logo bonus!

  1. An Island - in a Lake/Loch/Lough
Bonus point if there is a building on the island.

I’m claiming 2 points for an island in a lake with a building. Taken 17th August with my DJI Mini SE.

Its a lake according to OS map (see pic) and the building is just a pagoda, not a house and noone lives in it. Its hard to get the building in shot as its summer and there are so many trees, however the OS map shows a building to corroborate.

The OS map…

Point of interest… MPs cant resign, they can however take the ‘Manor of Northstead’, one of two ways to disqualify you as an MP. Northstead - Wikipedia

  1. This may be your Mission Impossible - a railway track passing under a road bridge

16th August. A165 crossing the Esk (and North York Moors Railway) at Whitby, North Yorkshire. DJI Mini SE.

I misread this and waited for the train to be there. I can only claim the 1 point as no sign of HGVs.

Yes, an artic with forty-foot trailer would have been definitely useful there :frowning: Just the one, Mrs. Wembley

No problem, thought it worth a try as theres loads around London. And yes you knew exactly where i was coming from. Box Park Shoreditch would have been an option for me and there’s also some container offices on several of the HS2 sites.
