Which video editing software

Hi,
What do people think is the best, free, no massive computer resource grabbing, video editing software?
Has anybody experience with VSDC?
Thanks
Steve :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Steve,
I tried several free ones but didnā€™t get on with them to well, so paid out for Cyberlink power director about 30 quid, it has some very good tools in it but I still struggle editing video,
I need one thatā€™s child/ idiot proof ha ha ha!
Oh well back to the how to vids

Moved your post over to a pre-existing thread on the subject ā€¦ rather than another thread with all the same answers. Weā€™d end up with a hundred versions of this oft asked question, otherwise.
Plenty of answers above, and plenty will be added.

Thanks, I tried a quick search for a suitable thread, but obvs failed miserably

Hi, thanks for the reply,
I used to use Pinnacle Studio, it was heavy on resources so did not bother renewing the subs.
Now have NCH Video Pad, itā€™s OK but even on my i5 with a SSHD it takes ages to pre-load the files for the editing window so Iā€™m on the look out for something that runs quick. My needs arenā€™t greedy, I donā€™t want loads of fancy effects, just to be able to crop, re-siize, video in video, correct exposure etc. will suffice.
Cheers
Steve

Hi, reading back it seems Resolve wins much praise.
Is it resource hungry? Iā€™m using a Lenovo T430, i5, max RAM and a SSHD
Thanks

Any video editor is going to hit RAM and processor and disk speeds if you want them to do the same render. The same work still has to be done.

The more one uses 4k and processor intensive compressions (like H265), the more youā€™ll be demanding of your hardware.
Resolve has features that enable smoother editing, and dynamic rendering of things in the edit can be turned off, which also helps.

If you decide to give it a try, I can point you toward some excellent YouTube videos, including one that helps when using a less powerful computer.

The free version can do pretty much anything. It is in fact identical to their Studio version, with a few esoteric features disabled. Most importantly there are no resolution/size limits or any watermarks or other games played to force you to pay.

Itā€™s only downside is that it can take a little longer to get into than some others, but at the same time youā€™ll never bump into a ceiling and have to change.

Depends largely on what i5 you have.

If itā€™s an old generation or low power ā€œUā€ model it might be slow with whatever software you use.

Intel added H.265 hardware acceleration from skylake (6th gen) onwards.

For H264, older CPUs work but obviously take longer.

With Resolve being free there is no harm in trying and would be my first choice as theres not much chance of you out growing it.

Iā€™ve been using openshot for a while now. Tried loads of other free ones but like openshot best

Myself like quite a few others struggle with video editing and also need to get my head around something that offeres a good finish and is easy to follow. At the moment I use Windows Video Editor I find it quite easy to use but doesnā€™t have enough bells & whistles for me. But I do need to knuckle down and get into it.

Hi All,

Recently purchased the DJI Mavic Mini, love it so far! Took it for its first test flight today.

I used iMovie to edit the clips but only just realised it only lets you export in 1080p 60 which is not suitable when Iā€™ve been recording in 2.7kā€¦

What editing software is good for editing which also is not too complicated to use which allows 2.7k/4K export? Iā€™m on mac also.

Thanks

try resolve 16 its free , but It does look complicated at first

@Drones-CL Iā€™ve moved your post over to this existing thread as this question is asked on an almost monthly basis.

Also, on the first post in this thread are four other linked topics on the same subject.

Hopefully theyā€™ll answer your question but shout if not :+1:t2:

Sorry @PingSpike, Thanks for the help with moving it.

Ive ā€œtriedā€ loads of them and currently settled on Shotcut - only because its like a ā€œDummyā€™s Guide to ā€¦ā€ which I most definitely need !!! Maybe there IS a Dummys guide to video editing - without the need to get a b****cking for not coming to bed because Iā€™m on bleeding you tube till 3 am trying to work out how to do a transition

Hi all,

I have an iMac and would like some advice on the options for editing the footage I take on my mavic 2 pro?

I donā€™t want to do anything drastic with the footage but I want to have the freedom to change what I what.

Hi @Airwolf

Are you looking to pay for editing software?

If not, Iā€™ve heard resolve 16 is good to use. Iā€™ve downloaded it myself for my Mac but couldnā€™t get to grips with it personally but I do believe itā€™s easy to use and a lot of people do recommend it.

Personally I use Adobe Premiere Pro, easy to use and can export in various ways using presets to suit where youā€™re uploading your footage e.g YouTube, Facebook etc. I watched a quick 20 minute video on YouTube to understand the Basics on it and also has tutorials in the software if needed.

Thanks

DaVinci Resolve is amazing I really enjoy using it but I know it can have issues running on some devices. Filmora 9 is another good, fairly simple to use platform and gives some great results. @mockingbird71 is the guy to talk to regarding Filmora9 :ok_hand:

DaVinci Resolve for me. I have used most of the ā€œfront lineā€ video editing products listed here with varying levels of success. DaVinci Resolve just seems to click with me and I really enjoy using it. Iā€™m still a newbie user but itā€™s my goto editing suite these days.
