Which video editing software

There are a few factors creating a bottleneck here (and I’m still using an older Intel Mac myself so I know its limitations). Because modern h.264 and h.265 (MPEG4) long-GOP codecs are VERY processor-intensive they really need hardware acceleration built into the chipset at the factory (like the new M1 Macs have) or a ridiculous amount of processing power from the CPU and the GPU, plus lots of RAM memory. This is all because in order to get the video file size down / squeeze more recording time on the memory card the codec throws away a lot of data which then has to be rebuild on-the-fly in the edit system. To answer your question about the ‘trash can’ Mac Pro: yes it will do a much better job than a 2014 MBP but it’s still using a crazy amount of brute force to achieve it. The smart solution would be to use a new M1, M2 or M3 Mac (Apple Silicon) - it uses a fraction of the power to achieve the same result and will run newer versions of things like Resolve, if you ever migrate to that. Even a basic MacBook Air with an M1 processor and 16GB of ram is insanely powerful by comparison. But of course there’s a big jump in initial cost by going straight to Apple Silicon. If the ‘trash can’ is irresistibly cheap (say, under £300) it might be a good stop-gap solution for a year or two.

I’ve just upgraded my PC instead of the Mac route with the above mentioned Mac Pro 2013. I now have an i9 10 Core / 20 Thread CPU, 64 G DDR4, nVDIA 1660 Super CPU. 2 TB M2 as a C drive and 2 X 3TB storage Spaces. Originally had a 4TB Storage Space but decided not to replace a failed drive. Additional 12 TB in a Synologogy Rack Station for long term storage. Still using the Free resolve for now but looking to get the Speed Editor this year which includes a Studio licence.

Can we keep this thread to the editing software, as per the title, please. There are many other threads in relation to hardware.

Thanks.

I thought I was in Suzanne’s original post on upgrading her laptop ! Didn’t realise I was on this thread

Hi,
I’m a very new starter with this, joust bought my first Drone and managed to set it up and fly a few time. My task now is to take a few Visio’s and pictures and then identify the best program for that to edit. Given I have no expariance I think this may be a challenge, do you have any advice?

If it’s a DJI drone, then instal the Lightcut editor, it is easy to use and produces impressive results. I hardly use anything else.

Does it render in 4k

Yes but there are loads of complaints that the quality is very poor and seen as a poor replacement for CapCut :+1:

Using iMovie on MacBook Pro also have downloaded DaVinci lite to try at somepoint.

I currently use FCPX on a mbp m2 looking to try DaVinci I’ve trawled YouTube for tutorial videos can anyone suggest best YouTuber or point me in the right direction to learn it

I have always liked the style of AlexTech

He has hundreds of videos on DaVinci Resolve so you may have to hunt about a bit to find a basic introduction one … this one is typical

Shaun, I posted more info in my reply to your duplicate question here … Davinci Resove - 19 - Public Beta - #7 by OzoneVibe

I included a link to the best “beginner course” for Resolve that I’ve seen posted by any YouTuber (as opposed to the so many YTs that just leap around features … more useful once you have an understanding of the software).
